Stéphane Grappelli est un musicien majeur dans l’histoire de la musique. Il est impossible que son nom s’efface de la mémoire collective. Je lui portais une grande tendresse et une immense admiration. J’étais, comme il m’appelait toujours, son «?Petit Fils?». Il était un peu comme le grand-père que je n’avais plus. Cet enregistrement est une façon de nous rassembler, musiciens et amis qui l’aimions tant, pour raviver son souvenir.    Didier Lockwood

Enregistré en 2008 pour célébrer le centenaire de la naissance de Stéphane Grappelli, Didier Lockwood réunit parmi la fine fleur du jazz français un formidable aréopage de musiciens. Tous ces artistes, de Martial Solal à Romane, viennent dédicacer de leur art leurs impressions et souvenirs du violoniste qui marqua de son archet tout un pan de l’histoire de la musique jusqu’à sa disparition en 1997. Un disque où tous les jazz se confondent rendant hommage à tout l’univers Grappelli. Un CD bonus accompagne l’album et propose des vidéos et interviews qui mettent formidablement en exergue l’enthousiasme et la passion qui ont parcouru la réalisation de cet album.

When he recorded this album in 2008 to celebrate Stéphane Grappelli’s centennial year, Didier Lockwood put together a fantastic band
comprising the cream of French jazz. Every one of these musicians, from Martial Solal to Romane, dedicated his artistry to impressions and memories of the violinist whose bow marked a whole era in jazz before his passing in 1997. And the result is a CD where all forms of jazz blend together in a great tribute to Grappelli and his universe. This homage is accompanied by a bonus CD with videos and interviews highlighting the wonderful enthusiasm and passion that went into the making of this album.

L'esprit du maître par Jazz Magazine

Entouré d’une vingtaine de musiciens parmi les meilleurs (Sylvain Luc, André Ceccarelli, Romane, Martial Solal, Eric Legnini…), Didier Lockwood enregistrait en 2008 ce vibrant hommage à son mentor, Stéphane Grappelli. En variant les formules (duo, trio, etc.), le violoniste réussit à varier les couleurs pour évoquer avec tendresse l’esprit du maître à travers dix-huit thèmes anciens et nouveaux. “Lockwood established his own musical identity long ago” The New York City Jazz Record

“Didier Lockwood, who turns 60 this month, counts late violin master Stéphane Grappelli among his influences, though Lockwood established his own musical identity long ago. For this tribute, Lockwood utilizes a constantly shifting supporting cast of veterans and others deserving wider international recognition, with most of the 18 selections pieces Grappelli recorded or performed during his career.
For much of his Gypsy-flavored rendition of “Night and Day” Lockwood emulates a whistler with his violin, though he swings quite nicely, complemented by Romane’s Django-inspired guitar solo. Lockwood opts for subtlety in his approach to “Tea For Two”, playing a spacious duet with guitarist Sylvain Luc. Pianist Martial Solal is his partner for the darting take of “C’est Si Bon” while the rhythm section is anchored by the underrated veteran pianist René Urtreger in an explosive take of “Just One of Those Things”, featuring some of Lockwood’s best work on this release.
Guitarist Martin Taylor toured and recorded extensively with Grappelli, so he is a perfect match, in addition to bassist Jean-Philippe Viret, for an intimate interpretation of “Someone To Watch Over Me”. Another Grappelli sideman, guitarist Marc Fosset, is on hand for a hard-charging take of “Honeysuckle Rose”, the leader acknowledging the late master by replicating his trademarked end-of-phrase high notes. Lockwood’s choice of a slow tempo for “As Time Goes By” enhances its lyricism and showcases harmonica master Toots Thielemans.
Like Grappelli, Lockwood delights in sharing the spotlight with a fellow violinist, trading hot licks with Fiona Monbet in a rousing “Tiger Rag” or with Pierre Blanchard in the leader’s Baroque-flavored “Jazzuetto”. Of course, it’s hard for Lockwood to restrain himself from showing off his virtuoso chops as in his solo feature of 19th century classical violin great Niccolò Paganini’s “Mouvement Perpétuel”. Disc 2 was obviously made for European audiences; the interviews with Lockwood, Grappelli and documentary footage are all in French, as are the PDF documents, The two stand-alone audio tracks have nothing to do with the tribute: “Solo Globe-trotter” is a lively overdubbed raga while “Bossa For Didier” is an easygoing affair with bass and guitar.”

“Celebrating the centenary of the great Stéphane Grappelli’s birth, this musical homage was first released in 2008 and has now been given a welcome reissue.  Curiously this is not Didier Lockwood’s first tribute to Grappelli; the first, Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli, was recorded in 2000 but this later recording is a much more lavish affair adorned by a host of guest artists, many with their own connections to the late violinist. Lockwood was feted by Grappelli, who called him his “grandson”, the older man perhaps regarding the younger as his natural successor, since Jean-Luc Ponty, surely the most eminent jazz violinist alive, was so taken with electronics. For anyone familiar with Grappelli’s work, this is a deserved tribute as the violinist was undoubtedly the finest exponent of the violin in jazz to date. Good as his peers are or were, they have never matched Grappelli’s sheer stylistic finesse and panache played with such apparent (but deceptive) insouciance. On this CD there are many moments which truly capture the spirit of Stéphane, none more so than on the deftly performed Honeysuckle Rose. The gimmicky scratchy 78rpm sound effect at the start of Sweet Georgia Brown only adds piquancy to its fiery swing. However, on As Time Goes By and contrary to all textual attributions in the CD booklet and tray Toots Thielemans, does not play guitar but harmonica – the instrument for which he is most renowned. The second CD contains two bonus tracks of music, the first an eastern sounding revisit to his 2003 album Globe-Trotter, the second, Bossa Pour Didier was composed by Grappelli for Lockwood. Also included on CD2 are ten short videos in French of some of the musicians involved in the project including Dee Dee Bridgwater, Toots Thielmans, Daniel Humair and Birelli Langrene. Five are of Lockwood himself (including one with footage of him accompanying Stéphane Grappelli). A seven page article on Lockwood plus three images of Grappelli are also included.”
